SAINT PAUL - On August 20, 2024, Secretary of State Steve Simon convened the State Canvassing Board to review the canvass report for the 2024 Primary and certify the results.
In the 2024 primary, 543,982 Minnesotans cast ballots, which is 12.77% of the eligible voting population. This is a decrease from the last three statewide primaries in which around 20% of the eligible voting population cast ballots. It is an increase from the 2016 statewide primary when 7.42% of eligible voters cast ballots. (More: Minnesota State Primary Statistics)
“Voters have a variety of big and small reasons as to why they choose to vote or not to vote,” said Secretary Simon. “We know that low turnout primaries are not indicative of low turnout general elections. This November, we can expect to see a much higher turnout than the primary as we do every election season.”
A total of 126,644 voters cast an absentee or mail-in ballot in the 2024 primary, which is 23.28% of the total votes cast.
