Secretary Simon Statement on Supreme Court Decision Regarding Voter Data

April 8, 2020

SAINT PAUL —  Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon released a statement following the Minnesota Supreme Court's decision in Cilek, et al. vs. Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State, et al:

“I thank the Court for its thoughtful consideration of the issues at the heart of today’s ruling. The foundation of Minnesota’s nation-leading voter participation is the confidence that our voters place in the system—confidence that includes the security and privacy of the information they entrust with my office. The Minnesota Voters Alliance made a request that would have violated that trust, and I’m glad that the Court judged that to be an unacceptable risk.

Every action that I’ve taken in this case was to protect the privacy of Minnesota’s voters and to repay the faith they have in our democracy. I’m grateful that the Court recognized our legal argument, but more so that this decision will strengthen Minnesotans’ enduring commitment to our right to vote.”
