Secretary Simon: September ‘Voter Registration Month’ in Minnesota

September 1, 2015

"We must stay restless until every eligible citizen is registered, and uses that vote as their voice."

SAINT PAUL — Today, Secretary of State Steve Simon announced that September has officially been declared "Voter Registration Month” and September 22 “Voter Registration Day” in Minnesota.

This is the first time Minnesota has joined the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in officially proclaiming National Voter Registration Month (NVRM) and National Voter Registration Day (NVRD). Secretary Simon and Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill are serving as NASS Members on the NVRD Steering Committee for 2015-2016, a non-partisan voter registration awareness campaign to encourage the maximum participation of qualified voters around the country.

“Our vote is our voice,” said Secretary of State Steve Simon. “While Minnesota has over 3.1 million registered voters, an additional 800,000 citizens are eligible, but have not yet registered to vote. We must stay restless until every eligible citizen is registered, and uses that vote as their voice.”

In honor of National Voter Registration Month, Secretary Simon released a video, titled “Stay Restless,” which was filmed on the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, that highlights the importance of Minnesotans using their vote as their voice and encourages eligible citizens to register to vote. The voter registration process in Minnesota is easier and more convenient than ever before. Voter registration applications are available online in English, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese. They’re also available at every state agency and all 87 county offices throughout the office.

Minnesotans can also register to vote online, using same-day registration, or when getting their driver’s license.
