SAINT PAUL, Minnesota — Since the introduction of online voter registration on September 26 in Minnesota, 1,123 applications have been submitted for new voter registration or updating of existing registration, according to the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State.

The deadline to pre-register for the November 5 election is 5 p.m., October 15. The online voter registration system will remain operational following this deadline for Minnesotans to register for future elections.

“This tool delivers a convenient method for people to register in a safe and secure environment, while reducing costs and voter roster errors,” says Secretary of State Mark Ritchie. “Minnesotans can take pride in this system that is modernizing and streamlining the voter registration process.”

According to the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State, the online voter registration tool has resulted in:

  • 1,123 total applications.
  • 644 registration updates — due to voters’ address or name changes. Reflecting the experience of other states with online registration, the vast majority of transactions are registration updates.
  • 200 new voter registrations.
  • 218 applications are currently being processed.
  • 61 submitted registrations could not be processed because of incomplete or unverifiable data on applications.

Of the 1,123 applications, 903 were from the seven-county metro area. Hennepin County led all counties with 97 new voter registrations and 346 registration updates; followed by Ramsey County (21 new voter registrations and 69 registration updates) and Dakota County (27 new voter registrations and 61 registration updates). Applications have been submitted by residents from 51 of the state’s 87 counties.
