New Business Filings Year-to-Date Remain Strong
SAINT PAUL, Minn.—August 6, 2013— July was a good month for new business creation in Minnesota, with 4,625 new entity filings reported by the Minnesota Secretary of State.
“With the addition of July’s results, we have 35,685 total new filings in 2013 — on track to report nearly 62,000 new businesses and associations in 2013,”says Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.
The monthly totals of new filings for the year to-date are 5,519 in January; 4,779 in February; 5,448 in March; 5,548 in April; 5,293 in May; 4,473 in June; and, 4,625 in July.

The Business Services Division of the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State reviews, approves and files articles of incorporation and amendments for all businesses and nonprofit organizations doing business in Minnesota. In 2012, the division recorded nearly 61,000 new business filings. For the 2012–2013 biennium, the division projects collecting $27 million in business filings and other fees which are deposited into the state’s general fund.
