“Introduction to Voting” Video Series Released by Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State
and Commission of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans

ST. PAUL, Minn.—October 17, 2012—Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and the Commission of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans (MNCDHH) today announced the release of their jointly produced “Introduction to Voting” video series.  The series reviews the election process, the voting rights and responsibilities of Minnesotans, and how voters can register, get involved and become informed.  It also demonstrates the use of accessible voting equipment such as the AutoMark , and what Minnesotans, including voters with disabilities, can expect on Election Day.  The series is accessible through American Sign Language (ASL), captions and voiceovers.  Text and Microsoft Word transcripts of audio content with video descriptions are also included.

“Minnesota has a solid tradition of being a leader on accessibility issues, and the Office of the Minnesota Secretary is proud to have partnered with the Commission to produce these voter education videos,” said Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.  “I encourage voters with questions about the voting process or accessibility to watch these videos and on Election Day exercise their right to vote by casting a ballot.”

The videos are modeled after the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State’s successful voter education workshop entitled “MNVOTES: Introduction to Voting”.  They are designed for new voters who want to learn about voting, including how to register and become informed about the candidates and issues that will be on their ballots.  The series has four segments: The Importance of Voting by Secretary of State Mark Ritchie; Get Registered; Get Informed, Get Involved; and Get Out and Vote!  The videos can be viewed at: http://tinyurl.com/9e5hesu.  A link to the videos is also available at: www.mnvotes.org.

“As a lifelong voter and current deaf election judge, I encourage all members of the Deaf community to view this great video series that explains the who, why and how of voting.  I am proud to be a part of it,” said Emory Dively, pastor at Highland Park Deaf Church.  “I hope that this video series will encourage Minnesotans to work on full inclusion in voter participation,” added Rick Cardenas, co-director of Advocating Change Together.

“I want to thank all of the volunteers, local elections officials and my staff who work so hard to ensure that all eligible voters have equal access to voter education and to their polling places on Election Day, November 6," concluded Secretary Ritchie.
