Secretary of State Mark Ritchie Announces National Voter Registration Day
is Tuesday, September 25

ST. PAUL, Minn.—September 24, 2012—Secretary of State Mark Ritchie announced today that Tuesday, September 25 is National Voter Registration Day. The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State will be working with the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), League of Minnesota Cities and Minnesota Council of Nonprofits to coordinate statewide voter registration efforts.  National Voter Registration Day was established to encourage voter participation, increase awareness of voter registration deadlines and provide information on voter eligibility requirements prior to the November 6 general election.

“While Minnesota leads the nation in voter turnout, we still have over 20% of our state’s eligible voters not casting a ballot.  Improving voter turnout has always been a top priority for our office, and helping eligible voters register will increase voter participation on Election Day,” said Secretary of State Mark Ritchie.

State law requires Minnesotans to be registered at their current address before they are allowed to vote. The deadline to pre-register for the general election is October 16.  Minnesota voters can also register at the polls on Election Day.

Voters can use the office’s online Voter Registration Lookup at www.mnvotes.org to quickly see if their voter registration is current. The service also provides links to other voter resources such as how to register, My Ballot and polling place location information.

To register to vote Minnesotans must complete a voter registration application and submit it to their county auditor's office or the Office of the Secretary of State. Applications are available online at www.mnvotes.org or at county government offices and public libraries.

Those who register prior to the October 16 deadline will not have to register again on Election Day and will not need to bring additional documents with them to the polls.  Minnesota allows voters to register on Election Day as long as they provide proper proof of residence.
