Voters to Decide Senate District 59 and House District 61B Elections on Tuesday, January 10

St. Paul, Minn.—January 6, 2012—Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie today reminded voters in Senate Districts 59 and House District 61B to vote in the Special Elections being held Tuesday, January 10.

“I strongly encourage all eligible voters in Senate District 59 and House District 61B to cast a ballot on January 10,” said Secretary Ritchie. “Only those who exercise their right to vote will have a voice in who will represent them during this next legislative session.”

The Senate District 59 vacancy was created when State Senator Lawrence J. Pogemiller was appointed by Governor Dayton to be the Director of the Office of Higher Education. Candidates on the ballot in Senate District 59 are Ben Schwanke (Republican) and Kari Dziedzic (DFL). The vacancy in House District 61B was created when Representative Jeff Hayden was elected and sworn in to serve as the Senator for District 61. Candidates on the ballot in House District 61B are Susan Allen (DFL) and Nathan Blumenshine (Respect).

Polling locations on Election Day will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Extended absentee voting in person will be available at the Minneapolis City Hall and the Hennepin County Government Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, and on Monday, January 9, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information contact the Hennepin County Auditor at: http://www.hennepin.us/Elections or the Minneapolis City Administrator at: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/elections/.
