Q: Where should college students register and vote?
A:
Students have the option to either register and vote using a parent’s home address or their own school address, depending on which they consider their residence. However, they may only register and vote at one location in any election. See the Registering to Vote page for more general information, and Minnesota Statutes 200.031 for details about determining residence for voting purposes.
Q: How do I declare or change my party affiliation?
A:
Minnesota does not record voters' party affiliations.
Q: I registered to vote--why haven't I received my voter card yet?
A:
Minnesota does not issue voter cards. After you register, you should receive a blue Postal Verification Card informing you of your precinct and polling place, but this is not a voter card and does not need to be brought to the polling place.
Q: Who is eligible to vote?
A:
You may register and vote in Minnesota if you:
  • will be at least 18 years of age on Election Day
  • are a citizen of the United States
  • will have resided in Minnesota for 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • have any felony conviction record discharged, expired, or completed
  • are not under court-ordered guardianship where a court has revoked your voting rights
  • have not been ruled legally incompetent by a court of law
Q: How do I register to vote?
A:
Fill out a voter registration card and return it in person or by mail to your county auditor or the secretary of state.

Voter registration forms are available at county courthouses, city halls and other public buildings throughout the state, in many telephone books, in your state tax booklet (in even-numbered years) or by downloading a copy from our Register To Vote page.

You may also register to vote when you apply for or renew your Minnesota driver's license or state identification card.
