Custom Economic and Demographic Data of State’s Business Community Now Available Through ‘Minnesota Business Snapshot’

June 1, 2017

Over 141,000 businesses to date have participated in the Minnesota Business Snapshot since September 2016

SAINT PAUL — Today, Secretary of State Steve Simon announced the availability of customized data on the economic and demographic make-up of Minnesota’s business community from the Minnesota Business Snapshot—a new initiative he launched last fall to better serve Minnesotans and advance economic development.

The Minnesota Business Snapshot is a voluntary, five-question survey that asks business owners a variety of questions, including how many full-time employees they have; whether they self-identify as a member of specific communities, including veterans, women, or communities of color; the industry or field in which the business operates; whether it’s a full-time or part-time endeavor; and gross revenues for the past year. Over 141,000 businesses to date have participated in the Minnesota Business Snapshot since September 2016.

Minnesotans can now purchase customized orders by selecting a range of search criteria, such as by survey question, zip code(s) or city. Raw survey data from all participating businesses is also available for purchase.

“Over 141,000 Minnesota businesses—and counting—have already participated in the Minnesota Business Snapshot,” said Secretary Simon. “The availability of new custom economic and demographic data of Minnesota’s business community is a critical tool that will help small business owners, consumers and local governments identify specific partners and explore new opportunities. This is an important step to better serving Minnesotans."

The voluntary survey is being offered to nearly 550,000 new and existing businesses in Minnesota as they file their annual renewal each calendar year with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State.

Minnesotans can purchase the complete data set from all participating businesses for $100. Customized data can be purchased for $25. As a service to the public, the Secretary of State’s Office provides information collected from the Minnesota Business Snapshot to state, county, and municipal governments at no cost. The survey questions were created with the input of individual business owners, business organizations, non-profits, and researchers from across the state. For the complete list of survey questions and answer options, see below.
